The new Duracell rechargeable Li-Ion instant USB charger is about the size of a pack of gum - but still manages to deliver enough power for a full charge of an iPhone or iPod. The charger is also as simple as can get - it has one LED indicator, a switch, and ports for power in and out.

The charger comes with a short miniUSB charger cord, allowing you to plug it into a computer or USB charger for its initial charge. Once full charged, you move the USB cable from the "power in" to the "power out" port.

Of course, not all gadgets use miniUSB, but since the output power port is regular USB, you can plug almost any gadget charger cord into it, including the cable delivered with your iPod, iPhone or other (smart)phone.
But sometimes your favorite shoes aren't always the best for your feet. Or, they've worn a tad thin and no longer provide the comfort that you need for a long day of sightseeing, shopping and meandering on foot. That's why insoles and footbeds can be vital pieces of gear that keep you going even after a full day on your feet. We recently tested the SOLE Softec Response Footbeds to see if they can keep our tootsies happy while pushing pavement in New York City.
Continue reading Gadling Gear Review: SOLE Softec Response Footbeds

Gadling Gear Review: SOLE Softec Response Footbeds originally appeared on Gadling on Thu, 18 Mar 2010 12:00:00 EST.
Innovations in rolling luggage are pretty rare - mainly because there is very little left to innovate with. Thankfully, something new does pop up every now and then, like in the new Case Logic 22" Upright Lightweight rolling case.

This good looking piece of luggage is two things in one - a lightweight rolling case and a TSA checkpoint friendly laptop bag.

The model I am reviewing is in the gold color version - which is a very striking color, and something that is bound to help make finding your bag much easier.

The checkpoint friendly part of this bag consists of a laptop sleeve that slides into the front pocket. The sleeve will hold laptops up to 16", and when inserted into the bag, it provides a decent amount of padding for your computer. Because the sleeve has nothing obstructing the images of an X-Ray machine, you won't have to remove your laptop for inspection (unless requested to do so). The top of the sleeve has 2 handles making it easier to pull out of your bag.
Continue reading Lightweight security friendly rolling case - Gadling reviews the Case Logic 22" upright roller

Lightweight security friendly rolling case - Gadling reviews the Case Logic 22" upright roller originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 17 Mar 2010 14:30:00 EST.
The application brings easy air ticket reservations to your phone, allowing you to find fares from almost any airline in the world. Searching is simple - and if you regularly use the application, you can securely store your travel profile inside the program, making booking a ticket quick and easy.

During my review, I did run into a minor glitch - when entering an airport code, the app first matches the letters to countries. This means that AUS turns into a list of all the Australian airports. To actually find Austin, I had to scroll all the way to the bottom of the list.

Other than that, the program functioned perfectly - I had a list of all available fares in 10 seconds, and could book a ticket right away. The booking screen allows you to select the number (and type) of passengers, and even lets you pick a premium cabin. Some other apps require you to pay for their premium version to get access to first and business class travel.

Once you have booked a ticket, the app also acts as your booking manager, providing quick access to your itineraries.

Wanderlust is free of charge, and is available in the App store (iTunes link).
Yeah, I hadn't heard of it, either. But since we're being made aware of slumber, you should know about Western Mountaineering's Caribou MF microfiber sleeping bag.

Because I backpack when traveling for work, it was time to upgrade to something lighter and more compressible than my old-school down bag. I had several key criterion in my search for a new one: price (as in, as low as possible without sacrificing quality), size (I'm practically a midget, and why pay more for a bag that's designed for someone tall?), weight (I have a bad back, so shaving off even a few ounces is helpful), and three-season capability.

As part of the National Sleep Awareness Week, we've been taking a look at some gadgets and services that can help improve your sleep. Earlier this week, we introduced you to Sleeptracker, and today, we'll show off a gadget that actually creates an exact snapshot of how well (or poorly) you slept.

The Zeo Sleep Monitor consists of three parts - the bedside clock, a headband sensor, and an SD memory card. The combination of these allows you to monitor your sleep down to the minute - the system knows when you are awake, in deep sleep, REM sleep or light sleep. At the end of the night, you can review your sleep on the display, and upload your sleep report to the Zeo web site.
Continue reading Create a snapshot of your sleep and fight off jet lag - Gadling reviews the Zeo Personal Sleep Coach

Create a snapshot of your sleep and fight off jet lag - Gadling reviews the Zeo Personal Sleep Coach originally appeared on Gadling on Thu, 11 Mar 2010 11:30:00 EST.
As part of the 2010 Sleep Awareness Week, we'll kick things off with a smart gadget that can help you wake up more refreshed, and keep track of how well you are sleeping.

The Sleeptracker Elite is part watch, part sleep monitor. The watch uses internal sensors to detect your sleep patterns, and it uses this data to wake you when it feels you have reached the optimal wake time.

The watch itself isn't much to write about - the mens version I'm testing looks more like a $20 generic from the local mega-mart. It is also quite bulky, but considering it is filled with a USB interface and a variety of sensors, bulky is to be expected. The watch has four buttons on the side - glow, down, mode and set. Thankfully, it is also water resistant.
Continue reading Wake up when you are ready to be awake - Gadling reviews the Sleeptracker Elite

Wake up when you are ready to be awake - Gadling reviews the Sleeptracker Elite originally appeared on Gadling on Mon, 08 Mar 2010 10:30:00 EST. Even at home, I find them loathsomely girly, and they completely jack up my bad back. When I began zipping all over the globe as a food and travel writer, a day pack was the only thing that made sense for my carry-on/on-the-road essentials (my clothes and other gear go in my beloved Dana Designs Bomb Pack).

While I travel pretty light, there are things I require be within close proximity to my body: passport, copies of passport and medical insurance, emergency contact info., cash, credit and ATM cards (always carry a back-up for when, say, the machine in Portugal decides to eat yours), camera, flash drive, water bottle, water purification tablets or filtration system (I've finally learned my lesson on why these are non-negotiable), pocketknife (don't forget to check it before you fly), notepad, hand sanitizer, tampons (Ladies, do not trust foreign countries to have 'em), Kleenex-aka-TP, Imodium and ibuprofen, sunblock, sunglasses, snacks, language guide, reading material, itinerary, sarong for freezing bus and plane rides. These are the items I am utterly screwed without; should everything else get stolen, life will suck, but I'll be fine.

Due to my somewhat misanthropic tendencies, I choose never to rely upon the hotel safe or front desk for stowage of my valuables.
Continue reading The empty bladder: why hydration packs make great travel companions

The empty bladder: why hydration packs make great travel companions originally appeared on Gadling on Mon, 08 Mar 2010 09:30:00 EST.
The app is called TripAssist, and it provides one-stop-shopping for anything Expedia related. Once you link the app to your Expedia account, you get instant access to current and past itineraries.

One of the cooler features inside TripAssist is the flight status tool. Not only can you set up flight status notifications, the app also displays seat maps from SeatGuru, along with information about available power ports and whether or not you can expect to be fed.

The flight notification tool sends alerts by text message or email, bypassing the (often useless) Apple push notification system.

The "shop" portion of TripAssist does not actually allow you to book trips directly inside the application - it merely links to mobile versions of Expedia pages.

All in all, a pretty solid application. The lack of in-app bookings is a tad disappointing, but the itinerary management, seat maps and flight status features really make up for this. There are of course alternatives to managing your itineraries (TripIt and TripDeck), but Expedia customers can really benefit from having everything in one place.

TripAssist is free, and is available in the App Store

More Virgin news this afternoon, but this time it is from another of the Virgin brands - Virgin Mobile. Last year, we reviewed the Virgin Mobile Broadband2Go adapter, and as a quick reminder - this prepaid no-contract 3G service allows you to get online anywhere you are within the Sprint coverage area. Unlike most other products, the Broadband2Go service does not use contracts, and you are free to use the service whenever you want, by using a Virgin "TopUp card".

Back when we reviewed the service, the most expensive plan cost $59.99, and came with a paltry 1GB of data transfers within 30 days. Virgin just loosened that limit, and now offers 5GB for the same price. This puts the Broadband2Go service on the same price point as "postpaid" or contract 3G services, making it a very interesting deal.

The adapter also dropped $50 - and now costs just $99.99. The adapter is available at your local Best Buy or directly from Virgin Mobile (with free shipping and no activation fees).
Continue reading Virgin Mobile relaxes limits on prepaid broadband offering

Virgin Mobile relaxes limits on prepaid broadband offering originally appeared on Gadling on Thu, 04 Mar 2010 12:30:00 EST.
Are you traveling with a USB 3G modem? Even though there are some nice Wi-Fi enabled versions of these devices, not everyone is able to change their adapter. For those users, there are USB to Wi-Fi broadband adapters on the market.

In this review, I'll introduce you to the new Aluratek CDM530AM. This compact device features 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, a USB port, an Ethernet port and an integrated Lithium-Ion battery pack.

Using the device couldn't be easier - out of the box, it supports almost every 3G broadband adapter on the market. The initial setup involves plugging it into the network port of your PC, running the setup CD, and configuring things like wireless security.

Entertainment on the go is very important for most travelers. Some may find their entertainment in a book or stack of magazines, others (like myself) tend to rely on high tech gadgets. For those of you that enjoy their entertainment from TV on the go, there is the new FLO TV Personal Television

The FLO TV Personal Television looks more like a PDA than a digital TV. There is a reason for this - the TV is made by smartphone company HTC. Nothing on the device reminds you that you are looking at a television - there is no antenna and no tuning knobs.

On the front of the unit is a single button, on the top you'll find power button and battery status buttons, and on the side are volume controls. The screen is a 3.5" touch panel, and sound comes from a pair of stereo speakers on the rear of the TV, where you'll also find a sturdy stand.
Continue reading Digital TV on the go with the FLO TV Personal Television - the Gadling review

Digital TV on the go with the FLO TV Personal Television - the Gadling review originally appeared on Gadling on Sat, 27 Feb 2010 14:00:00 EST.
On my never ending quest to find lighter and more useful travel gadgets, I came across the Innergie mCube Slim. Crowned as the lightest universal AC laptop charger in the world, this tiny device can cut the weight of your laptop charger in half.

At just 5.7 ounces (161 grams) and 3.93"x2.16"x0.78" (10x5.5x2 cm) this charge is seriously small. Despite its small size, it still delivers up to 65 watts of power, along with 1 amp of USB power.

Now, before you point out that there smaller chargers for specific machines - the Innergie is the smallest universal laptop charger. My Dell Inspiron Mini comes with a really small wall charger, but it only delivers a limited amount of power to that small netbook. The Innergie mCube Slim can power and charge most full size computers.

Continue reading Lighten your load with the smallest universal laptop charger - Gadling reviews the Innergie mCube Slim

Lighten your load with the smallest universal laptop charger - Gadling reviews the Innergie mCube Slim originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 24 Feb 2010 15:30:00 EST. They have a go-to parka that keeps them warm and dry. If your winter activities are limited to commuting to work and running errands, then one such warm coat probably is all you need from November through February. But if you are as active in the winter as you are in the summer, then you know that aerobic activity can often keep you warmer than any amount of down filler can. As such, you need a coat that is breathable, water-resistant and allows for an active lifestyle.

That's why I was excited to test out the Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hoody. Arc'teryx is known for making outdoor gear with sleek lines and durable construction. The Gamma MVX Hoody is made for alpine conditions, and, as such, provides flexibility and warmth while remaining breathable. I brought the Gamma MX Hoody to Newfoundland, Canada for some adventure activities to see if it lived up to the Arc'teryx reputation.
Continue reading Gadling gear review: Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hoody

Gadling gear review: Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hoody originally appeared on Gadling on Wed, 24 Feb 2010 11:00:00 EST. Have you ever had the need to access files on your home computer when you are on the road? If you carry an iPhone or iPod Touch, LogMeIn Ignition might be the solution.

LogMeIn Ignition has been around for some time - providing remote access to your computer using nothing more than a browser. It is one of the most popular secure ways to get at your computer remotely. With their Ignition for iPhone program, that functionality is extended to your Phone.

To use LogMeIn, you perform a one-time installation on your computer, followed by setting up an account, and testing the connection. Once installed, you download and install the $29.99 LogMeIn Ignition app from the App Store.
Continue reading Access your home computer with your iPhone - Gadling reviews LogMeIn Ignition

Access your home computer with your iPhone - Gadling reviews LogMeIn Ignition originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 23 Feb 2010 11:30:00 EST. That's all I could think about as I tested the Cloudveil Koven Plus Down Jacket. That's a lot of money for a jacket. For $500, I expect a jacket to exceed all of my expectations. It has to have virtually no flaws. For me to recommend a $500 jacket, it has to be perfect (or, at least, perfect in terms of what it is attempting to achieve).

With a trip to New Brunswick and Newfoundland, Canada on my radar, I was eager to see if the Cloudveil Koven Plus truly was a $500, perfect jacket. As the trip approached, I eagerly checked the weather forecast for Atlantic Canada and was actually excited to see the frigid temperatures predicted for my time in the Acadian Peninsula. The Koven Plus was going to get put to the test and I'd finally be able to decide if a $500 jacket really was "perfect." When the time came, I took the Koven Plus to Canada for a week of outdoor activities in the middle of February. What I discovered is that price doesn't always dictate quality.
Continue reading Gadling gear review: Cloudveil Koven Plus Down Jacket

Gadling gear review: Cloudveil Koven Plus Down Jacket originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 23 Feb 2010 09:00:00 EST. Back in 2008, one of my first Gadling gadget reviews was for the SPOT Personal Satellite Messenger - a portable device that can transmit your location to a constellation of satellites. The device can be used for something as simple as telling friends and family where you are, or if disaster strikes, it'll relay your location to an international search and rescue organization.

Since I've never actually been in an emergency, I never got to test the "help me" button, but Wired teamed up with Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue in Tahoe National Forest to see exactly how well it works. The Wired reporter wandered 8 hours into the wilderness, starting at 3am - then he pressed the button.

Even though the search and rescue team knew the emergency request was staged for them, they had no idea where he'd be when he pressed the button. When he called for help, he was not even on the mountain they expected him to be, yet they still managed to locate him within 30 minutes.

The SPOT messenger retails for $149.99 (newest version) or $99.99 (previous generation). Service starts at $99.99/year for unlimited basic messaging. SPOT messengers are available directly from SPOT or their retail partners.

If you are regularly away from home, having a quick and easy way to keep an eye on things is pretty convenient. For the past couple of weeks, I've been reviewing an innovative new home video network system called the "Vue Personal Video Network".

The Vue package consists of a home gateway box and two small cameras. Home camera systems are by no means new - I've had Internet enabled cameras for years - but Vue does something nothing else on the market does. The Vue cameras are 100% wireless - this means no video cables, no network cables and no power cables.

The cameras operate off a single CR123 battery, providing enough power to view 10 minutes of video, every day for a year. The big advantage of this system is that you can grab a camera and mount it anywhere you want. Because the cameras use a "mesh" wireless transmission system, you can mount the cameras up to 300 feet away.

Video quality from the cameras is not bad - it isn't great, but it is most certainly on par with what most other home video systems offer. The streaming signal from the cameras is in VGA quality (640x480) at 10 frames per second. This is more than enough to see what is going on around your home.
Continue reading 100% wireless camera system - Gadling reviews the Vue Personal Video Network

100% wireless camera system - Gadling reviews the Vue Personal Video Network originally appeared on Gadling on Fri, 19 Feb 2010 13:30:00 EST.
To be honest, calling this a smartphone is being a little mean to this powerful device - it comes with a massive 4.3" screen, a 1GHz processor, 16GB memory (MicroSD card), 5 megapixel camera and full turn by turn navigation.

What grabbed my attention in the announcement is the inclusion of a pretty impressive array of pre-installed applications and content.

For starters, the phone comes with Transformers and Transformers 2 ready to watch. In addition to this, you can access the Blockbuster on Demand movie service, or watch live TV with the MobiTV service. Fans of books will appreciate the Barnes and Noble eBook application.

Better yet, you don't need to be on the ground to stay in touch - the T-Mobile HD2 comes with six months of free Gogo Inflight Internet access, which means you can get online on airlines equipped with the Gogo service.

The phone runs Windows Mobile 6.5, so you also get mobile versions of Excel, Word, Outlook and Windows Media Player.

Pricing of this new phone has not yet been announced, but I'd suspect it'll be between $250 and $350 when purchased on a 2 year agreement.

You can register your interest in the HD2 on the T-Mobile product page.
T-Mobile HTC HD2 smartphone comes with 6 months free inflight Internet access from Gogo originally appeared on Gadling on Tue, 16 Feb 2010 18:00:00 EST. If you are looking for a cheap plastic laptop, then I'm going to disappoint you - this review is going to take a closer look at a very sturdy and well built laptop. And any laptop with "sturdy" in the description is usually not going to be a cheap machine.

Thankfully, the HP ProBook 5310m isn't going to empty your wallet completely, and in the review, I'll show how you actually get a huge amount of value for your money.

But lets start with the basics - the ProBook 5310m runs on either an Intel Celeron low power chip, or a more powerful Intel Core2Duo. Storage comes from a variety of options - from 160 to 320GB Harddrives, or a 128GB solid state drive. It features an LED backlit 13.3" anti-glare screen powered by an Intel 4500MHD graphics accelerator.
Continue reading Sturdy and lightweight - Gadling reviews the HP ProBook 5310m Notebook PC

Sturdy and lightweight - Gadling reviews the HP ProBook 5310m Notebook PC originally appeared on Gadling on Thu, 11 Feb 2010 12:00:00 EST.
